St. Margaret’s House has been awarded a grant of £4222 from Tower Hamlets Homes “Inspiring Communities” Fund to deliver a celebratory community play with Teesdale and Hollybush Residents.

“Our Place, Our Story” is a community play that will be devised, written and performed by residents of all ages from the Teesdale and Hollybush estate with the support of St. Margaret’s House. The play will focus on the lives of residents on the estate celebrating the estate’s diverse cultural backgrounds, community cohesion and hopes for their future.

The idea came from the Teesdale and Hollybush TRA who wanted to have more fun and creative activities in their hall and do something that brings the whole community together. TRA Chair Margaret Cox said:

“We have a rich diverse community of which we are grateful. Our Place, Our Story will bring it together in a fun interactive way, it will build friendships and enable understanding of others giving a sense of togetherness.”

Jessica Amery, a theatre professional from St. Margaret’s House, will deliver free weekly rehearsals for the local community to talk part in at the Kedleston Walk Community Centre on the estate. Rehearsals will lead to two special performances at the community centre and at St. Margaret’s House. George Paris, Events Manager at St. Margaret’s House said:

“St. Margaret’s House has always hosted an eclectic array of events, but what makes this partnership so special for us is that we are helping to create a project in direct response to residents within our immediate community. One of our key artistic goals is to create a platform for people for both creative expression with a high level of artistry. This event does just that and more, and I can’t wait for the rehearsals to begin.”

Rehearsals start on 24 April, and then will happen every Wednesday 4.30-6.30pm. The performances are scheduled for the end of August 2019. For residents of Tower Hamlets Homes who want to get involved (whether that’s acting, or helping out with sets and costumes), they can email community@stmargaretshouse.org.uk to enquire about taking part.

This project is supported by the Tower Hamlets Homes Inspiring Communities Fund which offers grants of between £100 – £5000 to Tower Hamlets Homes residents and local community groups who have great ideas to improve their local neighbourhoods. Nikki Motohashi, Community Partnerships Officer said:

“It is wonderful to see a local organisation working closely with Tower Hamlets Homes residents. We hope to see “Our Place, Our Story” bring local people together to celebrate and learn, building new connections and new memories..’’

St. Margaret’s House is a community charity that’s been active in Tower Hamlets since 1889. Based at 21 Old Ford Road, their mission is to promote positive social change by creating opportunities for people to come together and play a more active part in their East London community. Their projects anchor them in the community, providing spaces for residents to eat, shop, learn, create, and enjoy a diverse cultural program. They also host more than 25 organisations and charities and many others that hire rooms. All the profits go back into the community, enabling them to run volunteer programmes and support local individuals and organisations.
